Mental health and wellness are just as important as physical wellness.

Thanks to decreased stigma and increased education, gaining access to quality mental healthcare is becoming much easier.

Disorders like depression and anxiety are more common in women than men, and there are even certain types of disorders that are unique to only women.

Disorders like premenstrual dysphoric disorder or perinatal depression are just a few examples.

For those reasons, women need specialized treatment for their mental health problems, and Hers is a company that seeks to do that.

But how effective are they? And is this online service worth all of the time, energy, and money? Read on to find out.

What Is Hers?

Hers is a holistic wellness company designed specifically for women.

The service was originally created to give women easy access to information and products relating to birth control, sexual health, hair and skin health, and other cosmetics.

However, the company has since expanded to offer new services to address the mental health epidemic in America.

It stemmed from stressors relating to the COVID-19 pandemic and now seeks to address holistic wellbeing from the inside out.

Hers offers four main approaches to treatment:

  • Online psychiatry and medication management
  • Anonymous support groups
  • Individual therapy
  • Free resources and content relating to mental health and wellness

They still offer primary care services and information relating to skin, hair, sex, and supplements — but the mental health service is what we’ll be focusing on today.

Hers: An Overview

Hers is one of many different online mental health services across the internet, but there are a few reasons it sticks out from the competition.

Pros

There’s a lot to love about Hers mental health services. There’s also some things to watch out for. Here are a few of the pros and cons of Hers mental health services.

Pros
  • The service tackles mental health from multiple angles, giving users flexibility and freedom of choice to find a treatment method that works for them.
  • Medications can be delivered straight to your front door.
  • You can get unlimited virtual check-ins and dosage adjustments from the comfort of home.
  • Consultation, diagnosis, and treatment all occur quickly and from home. You never need to travel to a provider in person.
Cons
  • There is no video chat or phone call option, as all therapist interactions are over a text messaging service. With that said, this is highly beneficial for some people.
  • The first month is a bit more expensive than leading competitors, which can be risky if you’re not sure how much you’ll like it.
  • Medication options are limited compared to competitors.
  • Hers does not accept insurance.

If looking over all of these pros and cons is enough to make you feel stressed and anxious, let’s see if this online mental health service can soothe your worries.

Is Hers Effective?

Hers is one of many telehealth options for mental healthcare, and you can get quality care without ever needing to leave home.

And the process is super easy in comparison to most similar online resources.

You’ll start by completing the questionnaire to be matched with a physiatrist. The questionnaire won’t replace your first consultation with a psychiatric provider, but it will help you get paired with a perfect fit. It’s about 40 questions, but we felt like they flew by and weren’t difficult to answer.

Next, you’ll see if you’re qualified to receive treatment. If you are, you’ll just select a time slot that works for you and your provider.

You’ll then connect with a matched therapist over a text messaging service to discuss your situation.

Finally, they’ll craft a treatment plan that works for you. You’ll have continued access to follow-ups, including unlimited virtual check-ins, for as long as you are a member.

While never meeting your therapist face to face might seem strange for some, it is a perfect option for those nervous about meeting in person or for those who do not have the time for an in-person or virtual consultation.

We felt that the text messaging service was easy to use, and we were able to gain a treatment plan the day after we submitted our questionnaire. Our therapist was friendly, and the experience was overall very positive.

What Does Hers Cost?

One of the greatest benefits of Hers is that it comes at a much lower cost than other telehealth services.

It’s about half the monthly cost compared to Brightside and Cerebral. Not to mention, the cost of prescriptions is included in your monthly membership.

You must pay separately for therapy to receive continued support outside of prescriptions. The site does not clearly state the cost, so it is hard to say if getting the extra therapy services is worth it.

While the first month is a little pricier compared to continuing months, the site always offers promotions for discounts on the first month. When you see those, it’s a good idea to hop on and see if this service is right for you.

Additionally, note that Hers does not accept insurance, so you’ll need to pay out of pocket.

Can I Get a Prescription Through Hers?

One of the cool things about Hers is that you can get prescription medication without ever coming face to face with a provider, and you can get them shipped directly to your door. Your mental health disorder can theoretically get treated without opening your mouth.

However, the variety of medications is smaller compared to competitors.

You can only get generic SSRIs or SNRIs for depression or anxiety, so if you need medications for another mental health disorder, you probably need to look elsewhere.

The good news is that Hers is available in all 50 states, so you can get help and treatment no matter where you are in the country.

Customer Experience

Hers only features positive customer reviews on its website, but the consensus from customers on other online forums is that they’re generally delighted with the service.

Most mention that the service works well, their provider was helpful, and continued check-ins allow them to adjust medications accordingly.

However, many customers were surprised that they could not speak with a therapist over the phone or video chat. The site does not do the best job of making it clear that this is a text-message-only service.

Who Should Use Hers?

Hers is not for everyone, but it might be an excellent fit for some. For starters, it is only open to women.

But also, this is the perfect service for women who do not want to come face to face with a therapist, as this is a text-only mental health service.

Also, this service is only for people with anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders like insomnia.

And since they have a limited selection of generic prescriptions, you want to ensure that this provider has the medication you want before you start.

Finally, Hers is great for people without insurance who need inexpensive mental healthcare. They do not accept insurance, but their out-of-pocket cost is low compared to competitors.

Hers: In Review

Hers is a holistic wellness brand with a virtual mental health component. The main benefits are that it is cheap and allows unlimited virtual check-ins after your primary consultation. While some may not love that you can only do text message therapy through the service, this might be a perfect avenue for some.

However, the prescriptions are limited, and the website’s pricing is not entirely clear. Not to mention, without an option to call or video chat with therapists, it can be hard to develop a connection.

All in all, Hers is an effective mental health service to help women overcome anxiety or depression without ever needing to come face to face with a provider. While you can get prescriptions delivered to your door, the selection is smaller than others. But considering you can have unlimited virtual check-ins, and the price is low compared to competitors, this might be a service worth trying.
