The explosion of telehealth has brought convenience to the medical market. It allows people like us to shop for health products and services completely online, right from home.
Sexual performance products are no exception. What used to be a taboo shopping experience is now more accessible than ever.
Unfortunately, this boom in the telehealth market has also brought loads of companies promising to help us boost our sexual performance, and many of them fall short of their promises. The industry itself is full of failed promises and riddled with transparency issues.
This can make finding quality sexual performance products hard. The overall efficacy and safety of products is always a primary concern for consumers like us — as it should be for anyone.
Promescent is one company looking to break into the industry of sexual health and performance products. They offer a full line of supplements, lubricants, and massage oils, and more.
Their Delay Spray is among their most popular products, promising to help delay ejaculation and improve sexual performance. Those are quite the claims.
But is this sexual performance product legit? Does this spray actually work? In this article, we provide you with an honest review of the Delay Spray.
Promescent is a telehealth company that offers unique help: sexual performance. They offer us a more convenient and discreet method for obtaining and accessing sexual health care and performance products, from condoms to lubricants.
The product in question for this review is known as Delay Spray. Promescent’s Delay Spray is made to help with premature ejaculation (PE) by delaying ejaculation.
Delay Spray was developed by urologist Dr. Ronald Gilbert. Before these products existed, control of premature ejaculation was treated by topical numbing agents, pharmaceuticals, and other methods — some of which caused annoying side effects.
Promescent’s Delay Spray requires no prescription and is meant to be a safe, fast-absorbing alternative to topical agents and medications. This type of product is sometimes called a PE spray.
No matter the name, the purposes are the same: To delay ejaculation and our orgasm without interfering with sexual pleasure. In short, it’s made to help us have sex for longer. That sounds great to us!
Promescent’s Delay Spray is one of the only lidocaine-based sprays whose efficacy has been evaluated by an IRB-certified clinical study.
We couldn’t find the active ingredients listed on their product page, and we don’t know why. But, after scouring their articles, the ingredient finally surfaced — lidocaine. Promescent refers to it as a “desensitizing” ingredient.
Lidocaine’s typically the go-to ingredient we see in most sexual performance sprays and topical agents. It gives a numbing effect to desensitize the penis. It’s often used to prevent premature ejaculation.
The good news is, research does back it up. According to a 2020 randomized, single-blind placebo-controlled trial, researchers found that lidocaine 5% spray is effective for treating lifelong premature ejaculation patients.
In the study, some patients were given lidocaine 5% spray (the others a placebo) for eight weeks. The lidocaine spray was applied to the penis 10-20 minutes prior to sexual intercourse. Patients reported significant improvements of PE.
It’s important to remember this study didn’t evaluate erectile dysfunction (ED), which is a totally separate issue. Lidocaine-based products aren’t used to treat ED.
Again, this lidocaine-based product’s designed to delay ejaculation during sex. The product works by producing a numbing sensation on our penis, specifically its most sensitive areas. The idea is that less sensitivity promotes longer-lasting sex and a reduced likelihood of premature ejaculation.
The penis is one of the most sensitive parts of the male body, with over 6,000 different nerve endings. These nerve endings send signals to the body during sex to give us an orgasm.
This lidocaine-based spray is essentially absorbed into the nerve cells just below the surface of the penis skin, temporarily slowing how fast its nerves send signals. It uses Dr. Gilbert’s patented TargetZoneTM Technology.
The idea of numbing a sexual organ may sound a bit odd to some people. But, Promescent assures its customers that sexual pleasure won’t be interrupted if the product is used as directed.
Not to get TMI, but we didn’t have any problems while using it.
How is the Delay Spray applied?
Promescent recommends that customers spray the most sensitive parts of our penis, which is usually the glans and frenulum. We did this 10 minutes prior to sexual intercourse, so the product could be fully absorbed. The recommended dosage is typically three sprays (we were told we shouldn’t exceed 10 sprays in one sitting). Effects lasted for around an hour.
What about partner transfer?
Because of the specially designed formula, there was little to no passage of lidocaine to our partner. This is unlike other sprays, topical creams, and gels. It’s designed to absorb quickly.
Why does it recommend 3-10 sprays?
Sensitivity varies from person to person. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. We were completely fine with three sprays (or less), but others might require much more to dull sensitivity. It’s always good to start at the lowest recommendation and see where you stand. The goal’s to use as little as possible — to save money.
Does the spray ever expire?
All of their products have at least one year until expiration.
Reviews for Promescent’s Delay Spray are overwhelmingly positive. It has a 4.75 out of 5 customer rating on Reviews.io.
Here are a few of the success stories:
I just wanted to reach out and say THANKYOU!!!! I bought the delay spray and my wife and I used it tonight for the first time. Not only was I able to last longer but I was able to give my wife multiple 10 out of 10 orgasms because of it. The product is amazing and I will definitely buy it again!

I saw this while looking for something similar I read the info about, it sounded safe and easy. Once I got it came with very easy to understand directions, spray certain areas also how many sprays and a very detailed diagram on WHERE to spray which is important. It works easy to say I only needed one spray but immediately noticed a difference. Highly recommended.

This customer had some nice things to say about Promescent’s customer service:
The ordering process was smooth and simple. After i ordered i was sent multiple notifications confirming my order, letting me know when my product shipped and when it would arrive. They even followed up afterward to see how I liked the product I chose. It is nice to see a company who cares about customer service again. And not just the bottom line.

Generally, topically applied lidocaine creams and sprays are safe to use, and we didn’t have any problems. However, there are some potential risks that are important to know about before using Promescent’s Delay Spray.
Here are some of the potential concerns:
There’s some evidence that suggests that lidocaine can be potentially toxic to sperm. One study from 2018 found that Promescent’s Delay Spray had a cytotoxic impact on sperm. It was found to significantly reduce sperm motility (how they move and swim) and viability.
If you and your partner are trying to get pregnant, this product shouldn’t be used. In fact, the product should be avoided if your partner is already pregnant.
Some of the active ingredients in the Delay Spray could cause allergic reactions in some people. Other inactive ingredients could cause irritation, especially if you’ve got sensitive skin.
The product comes with warnings not to be used by people with liver problems or sensitive skin. Also, this product can cause serious irritation if it gets in your eyes.
If you’re feeling unsure, you can always contact your healthcare provider.
Mandelay and Stud 100 are some of Promescent’s product competitors. Each is competitively priced and features the same low side effects you’d expect from lidocaine-based spray. However, there are a few things that set Promescent Delay Spray apart from the competition.
Firstly, this product is made in the United States, and the same can’t be said by the competitors. Also, both Mandelay and Stud 100 lack the patented formula and are unproven when it comes to clinical studies. This is a big separator. Lastly, Promescent’s formula boasts a much higher absorption rate than its competitors. We think Promescent is the superior product.
All in all, Promescent’s Delay spray stands up as a solid product. Its effective benefits are obvious by simply scrolling through its hundreds of reviews. For us, it worked, and worked well.
Pros:
Its drawbacks are few. Of course, you can’t prove 100% effectiveness because that will vary from person to person. It does have some minor drawbacks.
Cons:
So, does this spray actually work? We’d say yes.
Promescent’s Delay Spray seems like a solid product. What makes it stand out is the fact that it boasts a patented formula that has stood the test in clinical trials, and there isn’t another spray we can find that can say the same. Its pricing also felt fair — the less we had to use, the more money we saved.
The drawback is the same one you’ll find in all lidocaine-based products. Though the side effects are few, it can have some. If you and your partner are seeking to become pregnant, then this product doesn’t fit the bill.
Overall, this Delay Spray works for us when it’s used as directed.
