Keeps and Hims both offer prescription and over the counter hair loss treatment options. Hims has slightly more products available for hair loss treatment, while Keeps is generally less expensive.

Losing your hair is one of the most frustrating things a man can experience, but it’s extremely common. An estimated 85 percent of men will experience significant balding by the age of 50, and male pattern baldness is the most common culprit. Fortunately, there are both prescription and over the counter FDA-approved options available when it comes to hair loss prevention, and several telehealth companies have popped up in recent years to offer these options through online consultations and subscription services for hair loss products.
Two of the best known telehealth companies providing treatment for hair loss in men are Keeps (Keeps.com) and Hims (Forhims.com).
To help you dissect the differences between the two companies, we’ve provided a comprehensive Keeps vs. Hims hair loss treatment review.
Telehealth services have become increasingly popular during the coronavirus pandemic, but they have been around since long before 2020. Keeps and Hims are men’s telehealth providers that offer clients the option for virtual doctor consultations in their state to obtain prescription medications for various men's health concerns like men's hair loss.
In addition to offering telehealth consultations, Keeps and Hims also provide savings on their products, including both prescriptions and over the counter treatments, and deliver a patient’s chosen treatment options directly to their door.
Keeps is a telehealth provider focusing on treatments for hair loss in men, also known as male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). By contrast, Hims offers a number of different telehealth services, including treatment for hair loss, sexual health (like erectile dysfunction), online therapy, primary care, and more.
Because telehealth is a relatively new concept, states are still working on how best to regulate medical services provided online or over the phone. As a result, not all states allow the services of telemedicine providers in certain circumstances, which impacts the accessibility of different companies.
For example, Keeps is not available for telehealth services in some states; however, patients from these states are able to purchase prescription products from Keeps if they acquire a prescription elsewhere. Over the counter products are available for purchase without a prescription from any state. By contrast, Hims is available in all 50 states due to its more advanced telehealth capabilities, as described below.
The reason that there is a difference between the accessibility of Keeps and Hims is because the two companies differ in the telehealth services that they provide.
Keeps does not provide live video consultations, which are required in some states in order to provide telehealth services, although it does allow patients to speak to a licensed healthcare professional in their state by phone.
For patients who are able to use telehealth services in their state, Keeps offers a free first visit with a licensed physician and offers unlimited messaging with the physician for one year. This allows patients to ask questions about their treatment plan and possible side effects, helps the physician monitor the patient’s progress, and allows for the exchange of guidance during treatment. Regardless of whether or not telehealth services are available in your state, you will still be able to purchase your treatment through Keeps if you have a prescription from another healthcare provider.
Unlike Keeps, Hims does offer live video consultations, which means that it can provide telehealth services legally in all 50 states.
In order to use Hims, men create a profile on the app and answer questions about their medical history and symptoms. After completing their patient profile, men are then connected to a healthcare provider that is licensed in their state for further discussion about diagnosis and treatment. Some states allow for a consultation via text, while others may require a phone or video consultation. Either way, Hims has you covered. Patients are able to use the online dashboard to message their physician with questions about their treatment.
Keeps offers four different products with varying active ingredients (and varying potential side effects): finasteride 1 mg tablets, minoxidil 5% solution, minoxidil 5% foam, and ketoconazole 2% shampoo.
Both finasteride and ketoconazole require a prescription, while the minoxidil topical solution and foam are sold over the counter. Finasteride tablets are an oral treatment for male pattern baldness that works by lowering the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to male pattern baldness, in the scalp.
Many people are familiar with finasteride under the brand name Propecia. Minoxidil is commonly sold under the brand name Rogaine and is applied topically to the scalp in order to increase blood flow to the hair follicles, helping to push the follicles into the growth phase and encourage hair growth.
Both the minoxidil solution and the foam work in the same way and are applied to the scalp twice per day; they are just available in different forms based on personal preference. Patients will choose to use one or the other. Finally ketoconazole is a prescription shampoo that is primarily used to treat dandruff, itchiness, and flaking but can also be used off brand to stop hair loss.
Hims has a slightly more diverse product offering compared to Keeps. Hims offers finasteride tablets at the 1 mg strength and minoxidil solution, like Keeps, but it does not offer minoxidil foam or ketoconazole shampoo.
Instead, in addition to finasteride tablets and minoxidil solution, Hims also offers thickening shampoo made with saw palmetto, thickening conditioner made with niacinamide, and biotin gummies. Hims’ thickening shampoo is made from saw palmetto, which has been shown to help lower the levels of DHT in the scalp like finasteride tablets. In addition to lowering the levels of DHT, which helps to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth, the thickening shampoo also helps to thicken hair by removing buildup, unblocking the hair follicles, and stimulating the growth of new hair.
After using the thickening shampoo, the thickening conditioner works by providing much needed hydration for the hair and increasing the volume, helping it to look thicker. Hims also offer biotin gummies, which supplement the amount of B7 in the body. Biotin is an important component of healthy hair, skin, and nails, and ensuring that you have a sufficient intake of biotin is critical in preventing hair from being brittle, weak, or dull.
Both Hims and Keeps offer packages that are designed to treat hair loss and encourage hair regrowth.
Keeps offers three packages, each of which is delivered every three months.
The first package consists of finasteride tablets and either the minoxidil solution or foam, and it is considered best for overall thinning hair.
The second package is considered best for receding hair loss along the hairline, crown, and vertex and includes daily finasteride tablets.
The final package is recommended for thinning that is occurring only at the crown and includes either minoxidil solution or foam. Ketoconazole shampoo is not a component of any of the packages but can be added on separately to any order.
By contrast, Hims offers four different treatment options for hair loss, each of which are delivered monthly.
The first package, called the Hair Power Pack, is best for overall hair loss and includes finasteride tablets, minoxidil solution, thickening shampoo, and biotin gummies. If you want to go all in to stop hair loss and encourage hair regrowth, the Hair Power Pack is the right package for you.
The second package, considered best for receding hairlines and bald spots, includes finasteride tablets and minoxidil solution.
The third package is marketed as being best for receding hairlines and includes finasteride tablets.
The final package includes over the counter treatments only and is a great first step for early-stage hair loss. This wellness-oriented package includes thickening shampoo, biotin gummies, and minoxidil solution. The thickening conditioner is not a component of any of the packages but can be added on separately to any order.
Keeps and Hims bill on a slightly different basis, as Keeps packages are delivered every three months, while Hims packages are delivered monthly.
Keeps offers their most comprehensive package, consisting of finasteride tablets and minoxidil solution or foam, for an introductory price of 70 dollars for three months. After the first three months, the price increases to 105 dollars.
Purchasing finasteride tablets alone for the receding hairline package costs 50 dollars per month for the first three months and 75 dollars thereafter. Finally, the package containing only minoxidil solution or foam starts at 20 dollars for the first three months and 30 dollars every three months thereafter.
As noted above, Hims bills on a monthly basis, so men who prefer to spread out their expenses may prefer this package.
The Hair Power Pack, featuring finasteride tablets, minoxidil solution, thickening shampoo, and biotin gummies starts at 22 dollars per month. The second package, considered best for receding hairlines and bald spots and including finasteride tablets and minoxidil solution, also starts at 22 dollars per month. The third package, including only finasteride tablets, also starts at 22 dollars per month. The non-prescription package, which includes thickening shampoo, biotin gummies, and minoxidil solution, starts at 37 dollars per month.
Both Keeps and Hims provide a variety of hair loss treatment options for men and make it easier than ever to obtain a prescription for any medication you may need. While Hims offers more treatment options, Keeps is generally less expensive. Either way, your hairline will thank you!
