Male pattern baldness can be frustrating and embarrassing, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Companies like Keeps are making it possible for men to find treatment plans for their hair loss online using a multi-pronged approach that helps men stop hair loss and grow new hair.

Keeps offers both prescription and over the counter treatments via its licensed physician telemedicine services, but does this hair loss treatment actually work? We’ve put together a complete Keeps.com review that will tell you everything you need to know.

What is the most common reason why men lose their hair?

Although there are many different reasons why men experience hair loss, the most common reason is male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia. The American Hair Loss Association estimates that about 95 percent of hair loss in men can be attributed to male pattern baldness; other reasons why hair loss may occur can include medical conditions, medication side effects, stress, and other lifestyle factors.

Male pattern baldness runs in families and is known to have a strong genetic component, although researchers do not yet understand the mechanism by which it is passed down. The condition isn’t just a problem for middle aged and elderly men; approximately one quarter of the men who experience male pattern hair loss begin seeing hair thinning in a noticeable way by the time they turn 21.

The likelihood of experiencing hair loss only increases as men age. By age 50, a full 85 percent of men will have experienced significant hair loss. The condition is caused by rising levels of a hormone called DHT in the body and scalp. DHT influences a number of bodily functions, but among them is hair growth. High levels of DHT in the scalp cause the hair follicles to start shrinking, which pushes existing hair out and prevents new hair from growing. As a result, some treatments for male pattern baldness focus on lowering the levels of DHT in the scalp.

What products does Keeps offer for hair loss?

Keeps offers four different products that are designed to address the most common causes of hair loss in men: finasteride tablets, minoxidil 5% hair regrowth solution, minoxidil 5% hair regrowth foam, and ketoconazole 2% shampoo. Minoxidil solution and foam can be purchased without a prescription, while finasteride and ketoconazole require a prescription, which can be obtained through Keeps.

Finasteride Tablets

Finasteride, brand name Propecia, is a prescription medication that is taken by mouth once per day at a dose of 1 mg. Unlike most men's hair loss solutions, which are topical treatment, finasteride works from the inside out by lowering the levels of DHT, a hormone that contributes to male pattern baldness, in the scalp.

Finasteride is FDA-approved for the treatment of hair loss in men and can help stop receding hairlines in their tracks while also boosting hair regrowth. The medication is available by prescription only because it can cause potentially dangerous side effects in people with a history or prostate cancer, but in general, the medication is well tolerated and side effects are relatively rare.

Finasteride lowers the levels of DHT in the scalp, helping to reduce or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth on the hairline, crown, and vertex.

Minoxidil 5% Hair Regrowth Solution

Minoxidil is one of the most well known treatments in the hair regrowth world. Most people are familiar with minoxidil when it is sold under the brand name of Rogaine, which can be used by both men and women and does not require a prescription.

Minoxidil is applied topically to the scalp where it acts directly on the blood vessels as a vasodilator, helping to dilate the blood vessels and increase blood flow to the area. Researchers aren’t sure exactly how minoxidil works to regrow hair, but it is believed that the solution interacts with a substance called sulfotransferase on the scalp, which converts it into the active form of minoxidil.

After the solution has been converted, it begins working on the telogen, or resting, phase of the hair cycle, pushing the follicle to enter the anagen, or growth, phase of the cycle more quickly.  As a result, the hair starts to grow back more quickly and grows in longer and thicker than it did previously. Unlike finasteride, minoxidil does not interact with your hormones and does not affect the levels of DHT in the body.  Patients apply minoxidil twice a day to the scalp using a dropper and should expect to see some initial shedding as new hair pushes out the older hairs.

Minoxidil 5% Foam

Minoxidil foam works the same way as minoxidil solution. Minoxidil foam from Keeps comes in an aerosol can that makes it easy to use, dispense, and apply directly to the scalp with less mess. Whether you choose to use minoxidil solution or foam is totally a matter of personal preference. Either way, you’ll apply the foam the same as you would the solution: twice a day to the scalp for at least three to four months.

Ketoconazole 2% Shampoo

Ketoconazole 2% shampoo is a prescription shampoo that is usually prescribed for the treatment of dandruff, itchiness, and flaking. Men with any of these issues can receive a prescription and purchase ketoconazole shampoo directly from Keeps, but even if you don’t suffer from dandruff, you may want to think about incorporating this shampoo into your daily routine.

When applied and allowed to sit on the scalp for five minutes before rinsing with water, ketoconazole 2% shampoo can also help to prevent hair loss.

Does the Keeps hair loss treatment actually work?

Keeps offers access to four different treatment options that are clinically proven to help promote the health and regrowth of your hair and stop or reduce hair loss in men experiencing male pattern baldness.

While it might seem surprising that an oral medication could help with hair regrowth, finasteride has been extensively researched in order to demonstrate its effectiveness. Finasteride has been shown by numerous studies to be clinically proven to reduce or even stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

Finasteride is most commonly prescribed at a dose of 1 mg per day, and that dose is used in the majority of studies that evaluate the effectiveness of the drug. Taking 1 mg of finasteride per day for one year has been shown to promote hair regrowth in nearly half of study participants, while taking the same dose of finasteride for two years was found to produce results in up to two-thirds of study participants.

Not everyone will experience hair regrowth while taking finasteride, but the vast majority will find that their hair loss is reduced or stopped completely; 83 percent of study participants taking finasteride showed no further hair loss after two years of taking the medication compared to 28 percent of those receiving the placebo.

Minoxidil Solution and Foam

Minoxidil has also been the subject of many studies about treatment for hair loss, beginning in 1987. The first study evaluating minoxidil reported that 40 percent of men receiving treatment with minoxidil experienced moderate to dense hair regrowth on the crown of the head.

An observational study conducted over a period of one year found that 62 percent of study participants using 5% minoxidil, the same concentration that is found in Keeps minoxidil solution and minoxidil foam, reported a reduction in hair loss; additionally, at least 84 percent of study participants achieved some increase in hair regrowth. In each study, minoxidil was found to cause minimal side effects.

Ketoconazole is prescribed for the treatment of dandruff, itching, and flaking of the scalp, but it is also used off-label for the treatment of hair loss. A small pilot study conducted in 2011 found  that study participants who combined ketoconazole with a topical solution of finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil achieved hair growth faster than those who used the topical solution alone.

However, ketoconazole does not help to regrow hair that is lost by male pattern baldness; it works by treating seborrheic dermatitis and allows your hair to regrow in areas affected by the condition. Ketoconazole use can help to prevent further hair loss, however.

Keeps offers all of the components you need to stop male pattern baldness in its tracks and start regrowing your hair. Patients have the option to treat their hair loss orally with prescription finasteride tablets, topically with minoxidil solution or foam, and in the shower with ketoconazole shampoo. Like any hair loss treatment, Keeps’ products work better when combined, so it’s recommended that patients try more than one product to combat hair loss and promote regrowth.
