As President Trump and Republicans push to replace Obamacare, President Trump has said that prescription drugs should be affordable for all Americans. Between January 1 and January 15, there were over 700 drug price increases.
Recently, President Trump tweeted that he was “working on a new system where there will be competition in the Drug Industry,” and that “Pricing for the American people will come way down.” During his initial presidential press conference in January, he stated in regards to pharmaceutical industry prices, “They’re getting away with murder.” It has been speculated that he would use the government’s vast buying power to force the pharmaceutical industry to compete on prices.
Trump has also met with leading drug makers, urging them to produce their medications in the United States and to cut their prices. He has also criticized foreign countries, accusing them of freeloading on the United States with price controls that limit what their own citizens can be charged for medications.
House Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland recently met with President Trump to discuss lowering prescription drug prices. Cummings is the top Democrat on the Oversight panel and has long cared about cutting rising prescription drug costs. The meeting goes against the traditional Republican position of opposing government action to address the costs. This is a good sign that the federal government is serious about reducing prescription drug costs.
