A mental disorder can take all the fun out of life. The two most common are depression and anxiety, and while the first disorder sucks away your emotions and makes it hard to want to keep waking up every morning, the second causes you to spend too much time worrying and fearing what may come to actually live your life and find out for yourself. Our emotions are supposed to help us make the right decisions and live a full life, but when we suffer a chemical imbalance, it can turn into the opposite.
That’s why medical researchers developed antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, starting in the second half of the 20th century. For the most part, these medications target certain hormones used by the brain which we know have something to do with anxiety and depression, such as serotonin and dopamine.
However, both the results and the side effects leave a lot to be desired. The drugs can take days or even weeks to fully kick in, assuming it works at all, and in the meantime you have to suffer through some very unpleasant side effects while you wait. The variety of drugs in each category is mostly there so that people can find one that combines results with minimal side effects when they take it.
But researchers at the University of Arizona have discovered something that might just change all that. On studies with rats, they noticed that the part of the brain linked to both depression and anxiety produces a certain kind of protein, known only as SIRT1, when either of these emotions is going at full force.
They still need to study whether suppressing this protein can also suppress these emotions, but if it does, it could lead to much more effective medications in the future. While it’s still a good idea for the long-term solution to be therapy, an effective mood-balancing drug can really help someone live a normal life and concentrate on the treatment.
