Protect Yourself From Medical Identity TheftIn today’s world, Americans are susceptible to identify theft with pretty much everything they participate in. Unfortunately, identity thieves have steadily increased the number of medical identity thefts.

What Is Medical Identity Theft?

Medical identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information to obtain medical care, buy drugs, or submit fake billings to Medicare in your name. Medical identity theft is more difficult to clear up than financial identity theft. Unfortunately, any events that occur with a stolen medical identity can become a part of your record. As a result, you could have a difficult time obtaining medical care or insurance benefits in the future. Between 2013 and 2014, there was a 22 percent increase in medical identity theft.

How To Protect Yourself From Medical Identity Theft

First and foremost, you should be on the lookout for warning signs. If you receive a bill for medical services you never receive or see medical collection notices on your credit report that you don’t recognize, you should contact your health insurance provider and report it.

You should also keep diligent medical records. Keep copies of your medical history, receipts, and bills from any treatments, doctor visits, and prescriptions. Furthermore, keep a detailed prescription history. Know who prescribed the prescription and where it was filled.

You should read the statements from your health insurance plan and read the explanation of benefits statement that your health plan sends after treatment.
