Most people don’t understand how the ACA works, and they’re not afraid to let others know. In fact, a poll operated by the Kaiser Family Foundation and reported by a number of major news outlets demonstrates that most people are not clear on how the law operates.
63% of people aren’t sure whether ACA insurance programs are private or government-run.
Likewise, 53% of the people surveyed for the poll have an unfavorable view of the Affordable Care Act. That means that the law is polling lower now than it ever has in its short history.
This is more relevant than ever as coverage deadlines for 2015 are coming up fast.
The concept behind the Affordable Care Act is one that’s completely new to Americans. Though the idea of some form of government-mandated, subsidized healthcare is one that has existed in Europe for many decades, nothing like it has been tried in the United States.
The patchwork of interpretations that different states have for the ACA will also affect how easy it is for state residents to make use of ACA provisions. For example, prices are higher in states that have chosen not to expand Medicaid using federal funds.
All in all, it may be years before people fully understand the ACA and it stops changing.
Although there are many people who remain opposed to the concept of the Affordable Care Act, it seems likely that it will remain the law of the land for a long time to come. Over time, people affected by the law will have to overcome the learning curve.
However, it could be five years, ten years, or even longer before all possible changes are made.
During that time, you’ll want to be sure that you are reaping as many benefits as possible and saving as much money as you can. To get to that point, it’s important to use a tool you can trust.
