Are You “Out Of Luck” If You Don’t Have Health Insurance Yet?

Are You “Out Of Luck” If You Don’t Have Health Insurance Yet?If you didn’t have the opportunity to enroll in health insurance under the Affordable Care Act when its final deadline passed earlier this year, you might believe that you are “out of luck” as far as insurance goes.

Thankfully, there are still some opportunities that might allow you to enroll in health insurance if you experience certain “qualifying life events.” Generally speaking, these events would change your health insurance eligibility or the health insurance options available to you.

People who have Medicare may already be familiar with the idea of “qualifying life events,” since some forms of coverage under Medicare can change based on similar events. However, 2014 will be the first time many younger people encounter the issue.

What Are Qualifying Life Events And How Do They Affect You?

If you experience a qualifying life event, then you may be able to contact the government through a special hotline and request an insurance enrollment period that applies only to you.

The most common of these events is moving to a new state. If you choose to get insurance under the Affordable Care Act insurance markets, then you must maintain insurance that will apply to you in your place of residence.

Moving to a new state gives you the opportunity to explore the healthcare marketplace in that state, which can be substantially less expensive than what you are familiar with. Even though each “metal plan” must have certain characteristics, costs will still vary widely.

There are also qualifying life events that have to do with changes in your family. If you marry, divorce, or have a child, then you might find that changes in the way your income is calculated will allow you to enjoy the benefits of a special enrollment period.

Likewise, if your income changes substantially, then you might be able to enroll outside of the usual period. In all cases, you will have to call the government for more information and may have to submit certain qualifying documentation before you can finally enroll.
