Alzheimer’s disease has recently come back into the public eye thanks to Gene Wilder, who died following a three-year struggle with the disease. Whether it happens to yourself or to someone close to you, Alzheimer’s and its cousin dementia are two of the most disturbing diseases out there thanks to the way it slowly destroys your brain from the inside out, taking away your memories, your personality, and eventually your ability to function independently.
Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s is also a mental disease, and as far as medical science goes, the brain remains a vast, unexplored frontier. So far, no drug has come out to treat the condition directly, although there are several out there that can help fight the symptoms. A few drugs on the horizon show some promise, but they may be years away from FDA approval.
Still, there is some good news to be found. A recent small-scale study shows that aducanumab, a drug developed by the company Biogen, can clearly reduce the amount of amyloid proteins in the brain. An amyloid plaque buildup in the brain is one of the unmistakable signs of Alzheimer’s, although it still isn’t clear whether this buildup is more of a cause or an effect of the disease. Still, the subjects who took the highest drug dosage performed much better on memory tests than the ones who took the placebo.
However, not everything about aducanumab is good news. The drug might not perform nearly as well in a larger-scale study, and it wouldn’t be the first of its kind to fail in the late stages. There’s also a problem with the drug’s potential side effects, which may also lead to brain damage. On the other hand, these side effects usually disappear over time, and so there may be a solution in gradually stepping up the dosage or else using another drug to treat the side effects until they go away.
But if and when an Alzheimer’s drug reaches the pharmacy, there will be two things you can count on: that the new brand-name drug will cost a bundle, and that you’ll be able to get it at a discount when you use your USA Rx pharmacy discount card.
