Asthma is one of those conditions that’s relatively common but very hard to deal with. It’s often connected to early exposure to high levels of pollution, and an attack can leave someone breathless and wheezing for several minutes. A particularly bad attack can even be life-threatening. Fortunately, we have medical inhalers that can stop asthma attacks soon after they begin, but it’s still a very dangerous and debilitating disease that sometimes progresses to the point where the medication no longer works.

There are several medications out there that can reduce the effects of asthma, but either they don’t work very well or they come with a lot of negative side effects. For instance, doctors currently treat severe cases of asthma with a steroid, which can cause weight gain and osteoporosis.

However, there’s a new drug currently going through clinical trials called fevipiprant. If it hits pharmacy shelves, it will be the first new asthma medication in 20 years, and the latest results are very promising. Patients with moderate to severe asthma saw their symptoms go down across the board, significantly reducing the number of attacks without the significant side effects.

Then again, it may be too early to celebrate just yet. The recent trial only had 61 participants, and they took fevipiprant in addition to their usual steroid medications. It could be that the new drug only works well in combination with the older steroid, or it could be that it has similar side effects that patients who take both wouldn’t notice.

Still, fevipiprant has already shown itself to provide more of a benefit than any of the asthma medications currently on the market. If the drug continues to prove itself in future medical trials, it could wind up improving the lives of millions of people worldwide. Even if it does have significant side effects, it could still save the lives of those with severe asthma and reduce their emergency room visits.
